About Us

The Monash Health Drug & Alcohol Service (MHDAS) operationally reports through to the Mental Health Program and is committed to providing opportunities for change and growth by reducing drug use, the harms from drug use, improving physical and mental health, and reconnecting and or maintaining people’s connections to their family and the community. The principle catchment areas are the Cities of Greater Dandenong, Casey and the Shire of Cardinia with sites located in Dandenong, Pakenham, Cranbourne and Berwick.  The service employs approximately 75 EFT staff and budget of approximately $7 million. We provide a wide range of services including: 

  • Community Residential Withdrawal 
  • Primary Health Clinic 
  • Needle Syringe Program – fixed site, outreach and syringe dispensing machines 
  • Mobile Overdose Response & Mobile Drug Safety 
  • Proactive Overdose Response Initiative & Naloxone Subsidy 
  • Aboriginal Metropolitan ‘Ice’ Partnership 
  • Youth Supported Accommodation and Youth Outreach 
  • Peer Led Network trials and 
  • Assessment, Counselling and Non-residential withdrawal 

We employ multidisciplinary clinicians across these wide ranging services including Peer Workers with lived/living experience. 

 

About the Role

This is an opportunity for a Dual Diagnosis Lived/Living Experience Worker to join us as part of the Southern Dual Diagnosis Service (SDDS) at Monash Health. This role will work within the Alcohol and Other Drug Services and the Mental Health Program and is being offered part time in a fixed term contract (30/06/2025). The successful incumbent will be expected to provide support to services/consumers in order to improve health, wellbeing and inclusion through providing support, education, brief intervention and linkages to treatment and referral services while providing support to the Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol sector workforce across the Southern Metropolitan region of Melbourne. This role will will work closely with key stakeholders, including supportintg the Way Out Program at Monash in Dandenong, however will require travel to other sites within Monash Health and the broader Southern Metropolitan region.   

Lived Experience Sharing: 

  • Provide one to one peer support for consumers presenting to Drug and Alcohol/Mental Health Services or other services within the Southern Metropolitan region, using lived and/or living experience of ADO challenges and recovery  

  • Purposefully share lived experiences with consumers, offering hope and support  

  • Listen, validate and support utilising the mode of Intentional Peer Support Principles (IPS)  

  • Engage and develop trusting and professional relationships with consumers  

  • Provide psychoeducation, support and referral pathway guidance according to consumer needs and services available 

  • Support consumers to take core of their own wellbeing/self-care and access appropriate community supports to grow and sustain their recovery  

  • Support understanding and navigation of the AOD and Mental Health System  

  • Co-facilitate consumer peer recovery groups and education as required  

 

About You

Qualifications/registrations/licences:   

  • Lived/Living experience of the drug and alcohol sector and/or mental health system 

  • Certificate IV in Alcohol or Other Drugs or Mental Health Peer Work or other relvan qualification (or willingess to undertake) 

  • Completion of Intentional Peer Support training (or willingness to undertake) 

  • Experience in either Menatl Health and/or Drug and Alcohol Services.  

  • Regognition and understanding of own personal recovery process and ability to use this appropriately to support others 

Other Position Requirements:  

  • Current Victorian Driver’s License   

  • Applicants who are new to Monash Health will be required to enter into an Employment Agreement before commencement
