About the Role: 

The Occupational Therapist (OT) is a specialist clinical mental health role. Occupational Therapy aims to facilitate the improvement of mental state and quality of life of consumers, maintaining their independence in the community wherever possible. Occupational Therapy seeks to achieve this through assessment, emphasis on functional status, and the utilisation of compensatory as well as rehabilitative methods, to achieve functional gains in independence. This approach is crucial as functional performance levels determine community independence options and to achieve our vision of; “Valuing and supporting each person’s unique journey to a life inspired by hope and potential”. 

In consultation with the Senior Occupational Therapist, the Nurse Manager and other team members, you will will be responsible for the provision of an effective Occupational Therapy service to inpatients of the East Bentleigh CCU and Mental Health Program. The position will utilise group and individual programmes, including Occupational Therapy specific assessments and interventions. The position will provide leadership to the Grade 1 OT and represent Occupational Therapy at a broader program level. 

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Grade 2 Occupational Therapist to join our team in East Bentleigh CCU. This role is part time (0.5FTE) fixed term role until July 2025. 

 

About Us: 

East Bentleigh CCU provides community residential psychosocial rehabilitation to consumers (18-64 years old) who have a serious mental illness and associated psychosocial constraints. East Bentleigh CCU provides a home-like environment where consumers can continue their recovery from mental illness and develop their skills and capacity for independent living in order to facilitate a transition to the community. East Bentleigh CCU offers an initial four-week residential assessment that may be followed by a medium-term psychosocial rehabilitation program based on individual needs. Referral sources predominantly include Monash Health community mental health teams (CCTs and MSTTs), adult acute inpatient psychiatric units, and the secure extended care unit (SECU).   

The Occupational Therapist will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and will provide specialist skills to residents of the CCU. 

 

About You:  

To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge: 

  • A well-developed understanding of and ability to navigate complex service systems including (but not limited to) My Aged Care, Transition Care Program, Statewide Equipment Program, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Mental Health and the recovery model is essential 

  • Experience working in an adult mental health setting and/or extensive experience in a relevant area of practice 

  • Up to date working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2014, the Carer Recognition Act 2012, and Chief Psychiatrist Guidelines 

  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe consumer-focused care, providing specialist knowledge or depth of experience 

  • Demonstrate initiative in leading quality improvement or research projects 

  • Demonstrate an ability to develop and deliver specialist clinical area professional development and education 

  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge and sensitivity to ethical and cultural issues and vulnerable population groups and integrate this into practice 

 

Mandatory requirements of the role: 

  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy or equivalent. 

  • Registration with Occupational therapy Board of Australia (AHPRA). 

  • Eligible for registration with Occupational Therapy Australia.
