About the Opportunity
Youth Health Services (YHS) works with vulnerable young people (12-24yrs) by providing therapeutic interventions. As the Senior Social Worker you will be the clinical lead for the counselling team providing leadership, mentoring and supervision. You will also have a case load which you be conducting assessments, formulations and treating young people with psychosocial issues. This is done within a supportive multidisciplinary team comprising of social workers, psychologists, registered nurses, health education officers and Aboriginal Health Workers.
We have an in-reach/outreach model to ensure we engage our clients in an environment that is comfortable for them. We also work in partnership with other government and non-government organisations to ensure positive outcomes for the young person. The location of the position is negotiable within the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) however you will be expected to provide outreach across the three YHS sites located at Bankstown, Carramar, and Campbelltown.
What You'll be Doing
The primary purpose of the Youth Health Service (YHS) Senior Social Worker (SSW) will be to plan, coordinate and provide evidence based, trauma informed, culturally and developmentally appropriate assessment and intervention to young people aged 12 to 24 years of age presenting to the YHS. The SSW is responsible for ensuring the provision of optimal health outcomes consistent with SWSLHD policies, procedures and guidelines (PPG), standards, relevant legislation and the NSW Health Code of Conduct.
This is a key role in providing support for a range of multidisciplinary YHS programs including counselling, group-work, health promotion, worker on duty (intake) and outreach

- A Bachelor or post graduate degree in Social Work that provides eligibility for full membership to the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
- Demonstrated high level clinical experience and understanding of the needs of young people aged 12 to 24 years of age and their families/carers accessing the health care system including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse and refugee client groups.
- Extensive post graduate experience working as a Social Worker with demonstrated understanding of working with at risk, vulnerable and marginalised young people 12 to 24 years of age, and their families/carers to provide high quality comprehensive assessments, care planning and delivery of appropriate therapy and interventions
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills along with excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills, being well organised, flexible and able to manage competing priorities, demanding workload, stressful situations
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of engagement issues related to youth, including but not limited to experience and understanding of mental health, drug and alcohol and other health issues facing young people.
- Demonstrated experience in the provision of clinical supervision, mentoring and development of junior staff and students.
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication, coaching, and consultative skills, including report writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability in building and maintaining professional and therapeutic relationships through the application of written, verbal, interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to initiate, lead, complete and implement quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff.
- Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
