About the Role -

An exciting and rare opportunity exists for a Senior Staff Specialist Psychiatrist to join the Sutherland Hospital Mental Health Service in a key leadership position. You will be part of an enthusiastic team working at this award-winning, well respected community hospital. The position is responsible for medical leadership and will work collaboratively with a highly committed consumer centred team to develop and maintain mental health services of the highest possible quality and safety. This position will be responsible for providing strong leadership vision, advocate for, and understand, the health care needs of the community, and deliver a consumer-focused health care service that meets these needs.

This position is a permanent position, and comprises of 0.5FTE Clinical Director role and 0.5FTE Staff Specialist role in Adult Psychiatry. The Clinical Director reports to, and works in collaboration with, the Service Director, with the role also professionally accountable to the District Clinical Director.

The position will also provide expert medical assessment and management of consumers within the Mental Health Service.

About the Mental Health Service -

The Sutherland Mental Health Service comprises a 28 Bed Acute MH Unit, a 5 bed MH Rehabilitation Unit, and Mental Health Community Teams who provide Care Coordination and Acute Care support to consumers in the community. The MHS is situated within the Sutherland General Hospital which has 375 general medical beds.

  • Sutherland Hospital
  • Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital

  • Garrawarra Centre

SESLHD also operates 28 Child and Family Health Centres, 12 Community Health Centres and nine Oral Health Clinics; providing prevention, early intervention and community-based treatment, palliative care and rehabilitation services.

Drug and Alcohol, Mental Health, Breast screening, HIV/AIDS, Public Health, Women's Health, Youth Health, Sexual Health, Imaging and Pathology services are provided at a number of facilities across SESLHD.

The primary location of this position may be varied as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services and as approved by MDAAC to other facilities in SESLHD.

  1. Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide AHPRA Registration Number on application.
  2. Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of FRANZCP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973 and the relevant Award/Determination, and demonstrated subspecialty training in Adult Psychiatry.
  3. Strong knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and quality improvement processes associated with the provision of mental health services.
  4. Demonstrated clinical leadership experience at a senior level relevant to the role· and strong knowledge of medical workforce training, credentialing and supervisory processes.
  5. Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high-quality service in the specialty, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  7. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate as a senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team, to communicate effectively with consumers, colleagues, and staff, work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites, with a commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.
