An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated SRMO to join the Radiation Oncology Department at Sydney Local Health District. This position is for a Senior Resident Medical Officer in Radiation Oncology.


What you will be doing:

This position is suitable for medical officers who are interested in training in Radiation Oncology. The SRMO position will complete duties similar to accredited trainees in the Radiation Oncology Department of Chris O’Brien Lifehouse with the suitable increased level of support and supervision from specialists. You will assist in conducting daily outpatient clinics for cancer patients with specialist supervision according to a regular roster as well as assisting with the review of inpatient consultations. You will perform regular ward rounds of inpatients (supervising a full-time ward-based RMO) and participate in the multi-disciplinary team meetings for the allocated term.

You will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills in Radiation Oncology and engage in education and research activities alongside accredited trainees. Candidates for this position will engage in self-directed as well as work-directed learning of relevant principles and material.

The Department of Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology care is provided in Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, an independent not-for-profit hospital, and one of two comprehensive cancer centres in Australia. The Radiation Oncology department treats Sydney LHD public patients and private patients and is one of the busiest in NSW, delivering over 1700 courses of radiation treatment each year, covering an extensive range of tumour streams. Junior medical officers working at Lifehouse are employed by the Sydney LHD.

Where you will be working:

The Sydney Local Health District employs trainees (both unaccredited and College accredited) to work in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The department is located within and managed by Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a private not-for-profit institution co-located with RPAH.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Demonstrated an interest in radiation oncology.
  3. A minimum of two years post-graduate experience (e.g. completed at least Intern and RMO years).
  4. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. With particular reference to: - providing clear direction to/ peers - recording accurate and legible clinical records - discussing medical information/breaking bad news with patients and their families.
  5. Able to make sound decisions in accordance with level of experience and awareness of limitations and when to seek advice.
  6. Proven ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team which include other medical staff, allied health, nursing and administrative staff to ensure the appropriate management of patients.
