Senior Doctor/SMO - Non Specialist

Lead and provide operational specialist medical support and advice within the Communicable Diseases Branch, and as required to Public Health Units on the control and prevention of communicable diseases in Queensland, including sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses, health care associated infections, the state immunisation program, notifiable conditions, and other communicable diseases. We have two fixed term temporary opportunities available (part time and full time) located in Herston for twelve months with the possibility of extension!

The role 

The purpose of this role is:

  • To provide clinical leadership and strategic advice for the development and implementation of state-wide programs and guidelines related to communicable disease prevention and control, consistent with national and international best practice.
  • To manage the relationship between the Department of Health and key stakeholders, including Hospital and Health Services (HHSs), and where appropriate interjurisdictional health authorities, and other state and federal government agencies, in relation to communicable disease prevention and control activities.

The successful person

You will have:

  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a medical practitioner. Specialist qualifications in public health medicine (or another relevant specialty) would be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated leadership involving multi-disciplinary programs and diverse work units to achieve efficient, effective, and timely outcomes.
  • Demonstrated high-level negotiation, consultative communication, and interpersonal skills as a basis for consulting with the Deputy Director-General, Chief Health Officer, government agencies, public health units, clients, community interest groups and stakeholders, health care service providers and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely using plain language.
  • Knowledge of relevant public health legislation and its practical application to support the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills, and experience interpreting and presenting complex information rapidly and accurately to a range of audiences, including senior executive, the media, and the public.
  • Excellent organisational skills and experience in managing high volume workload with inflexible deadlines, and competing and sometimes unpredictable priorities, in a demanding professional environment subject to rapid change and development.
  • High level knowledge and experience in development, implementation, management and evaluation of communicable disease policy and programs.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including demonstrated ability to provide successful leadership for teams and projects.
