Prison and Youth Detention Health Services is a rapidly growing division within the West Moreton Health region, delivering primary health care services to detained, remanded and sentenced prisoners and Young Persons across eight facilities (six Correctional Centres and two Youth Detention Centres). Prison and Youth Detention Health Services has varied operating hours at each centre. Prison and Youth Detention Health Services is a seven-day service with either 24/7 roster or two-shift roster (AM and PM), with centres varying between 8 hour, 9.5 hour, and 12 hour rotating shifts.

About the role

The registered nurse supports excellence in nursing care and patient outcomes, is a competent clinician who provides nursing care with clinical competence and capability, optimising access to care services. The registered nurse works in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to provide person and family centred, quality, safe patient care.

The Registered Nurse – Prison and Youth Detention Health Services provides contemporary, evidence-based nursing services and demonstrates competence in the provision of nursing care as specified by achievement of the standards of practice and registration requirements from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This is evidenced by educational preparation, continuing professional development, adhering to relevant legislation and the context of care.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Contemporary clinical knowledge in the area of primary health care nursing, delivering competent nursing care in complex situations while providing support to other team members. Clinical experience in corrections, primary health care, emergency or rural and remote health would be highly regarded.
  • Ability to comprehensively assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships, open communication and a positive environment within a multidisciplinary team, actively contributing to the learning and development of others to a high standard.
  • Demonstrated high standard of written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use or learn to use information systems appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to provide clinical education and support.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and contribution to quality improvement processes.
