About the job:


The Mental Health Professional role is a graded position which will work across The Greater Newcastle Acute Care Team (GNACT) and Greater Newcastle Intake Team.This role possesses a high level of autonomy and clinical leadership and ensures the consumer will have prompt access to specialist mental health care and/or referral to the most appropriate care pathway.The role also provides clinical leadership for the multidisciplinary team.

Key accountabilities:

  • The successful candidate will bring experience, commitment and compassion to provide exceptional care for consumers experiencing acute mental distress.
  • You will also have comprehensive clinical experience and knowledge in relation to mental illness, assessment and care planning including a working knowledge of the NSW Mental Health Act 2007 and governing NSW Health Policy & Procedures.
  • Your high-level communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team will be essential to your success in this position.
  • You will use advanced contemporary mental health clinical skills to assess, plan, organise, evaluate and deliver specialist high quality care to consumers within the service.
  • You will assist with the development of less experienced health care practitioners and other team members by providing support, guidance and direction. Contribute to the development of specialised education complex clinical issues for patients/clients/carers and the community.
  • You will ensure patients/clients and their families are well supported and informed of clinical interventions and deliver processes, enabling them to make informed decisions relevant to their health needs.
  • You will liaise with other senior mental health professionals working within the speciality (if applicable) to maintain current clinical knowledge and build networks.

  • Applying evidence based practice while dealing effectively & efficiently with a broad range of clinical issues.
  • Managing time and prioritising in the context of competing clinical demands.
  • Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and promoting professional opinion within the multidisciplinary team whilst managing complex clinical issues with multiple stakeholders.

Where you’ll be working:

  • Across The GNACT and Newcastle Mental Health Service Intake Team.
  • These teams provide comprehensive and assertive mental health care to consumers who are at risk of hospitalisation. The GNACT work a 7 day rotating roster with day shift from 8-4.30pm and the afternoon shift from 1.30-10pm. The intake team work 5 days per week from 8am-4.30pm.
  • You will provide clinical in-reach and support to Calvary Mater Mental Health Centre and Newcastle Safe Haven.
  • The Greater Newcastle Mental Health Service is located at the James Fletcher Hospital campus in Newcastle CBD.
  • Located across the road from Newcastle Beach, the historic campus offers an idyllic location in close proximity to shops, cafes and restaurants.

Requirements:

  • This position is graded as:
    • Occupational Therapist Level 3
    • Social Worker Level 3
    • Clinical Psychologist/Clinical Psychologist in Training
    • Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 2.
    • Graduates from the Bachelor of Health Science Mental Health (Djirruwang Program) may be appointed as Mental Health Clinicians.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW and willingness to travel for work purposes

  • To be eligible for employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport, or hold an appropriate visa that allows you to live and work in Australia. Employment of a temporary visa holder will only be offered in line with the conditions and expiry date of your visa.
