The Midwifery Unit Manager (MUM) of the Outpatients Department (OPD)/Maternity Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS) is responsible for overall coordination of the Outpatient Department services and the day to day management of the Department The responsibilities include liaison with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the smooth operation of the OPD/MAPS ensuring the delivery of high quality women’s health care for women accessing the services of the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW).

The Midwifery Unit Manager has specific Line Responsibility for the management of the Midwifery/Nursing and Clerical staff within the Department. The MUM is responsible to the Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services and functions within the Policies and Procedures of the Ministry of Health, RHW and the Nursing and Midwifery Division. The position has a specific focus on provision of excellent customer service and coordination of the clinics to ensure patients receive appropriate consultation and treatment.

The MUM interacts with patients and the multidisciplinary team to achieve the Hospital vision of providing care in partnership with women. The MUM will recognise the changing needs of women engaging with the Hospital and ensure a focus on woman centred care and best practice. The MUM will focus on providing support for staff and maintain an environment that promotes skill development, personal and professional development. Maintain responsibilities for personal and professional development by participating in training/education activities, and performance and talent reviews(PAT) in order to continuously improve the level of and quality of service.

The MUM will analyse the activity and budgetary results each month to ensure appropriate management of the available resources. The MUM will work collaboratively with other Midwifery Managers and the Midwifery Clinical Co-Director Maternity Services in the planning and implementation any changes with midwifery models of care within RHW.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur ifno suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.

A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Current registration as a Registered Midwife with the National Nurses and Midwives Registration Board (AHPRA).
  2. Relevant management tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience, or a combination of study and work experience with a demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  3. Has undertaken and continues to engage in professional development to further advance their management and leadership competencies.
  4. A demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management and delivery of health care services with the ability to support a number of Maternity models of care that promote continuity of care and collaborative models while maintaining a positive workplace culture.
  5. A demonstrated understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  6. A demonstrated understanding of quality improvement and the ability to manage change.
  7. Demonstrable effective interpersonal and communication skills that demonstrate the ability to engage, enable and manage teams.
