The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care. We are looking for a passionate medical laboratory scientist to join our scientific team. This is a part-time fixed term (18 week) position to work in our Biochemistry and/or Immunology laboratory. A requirement of this role will be to participate in our 24/7 rotational roster.

The Victorian Department of Health has recently announced a program of reforms across the public pathology system in Victoria.

As part of these reforms, the pathology services from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital will through a change process that is in progress transition to a new separate public pathology entity. The new model for delivering public pathology services will present an exciting opportunity to improve the scope, scale and reach of pathology services and testing capability to all Victorians.

As this role is with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the successful candidate for this role will be initially employed by the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Once the change process has been completed and the new public pathology entity is fully formed, which is anticipated to be in late 2024, this position and the successful candidate’s employment (including terms and conditions of employment) will transition to the new public pathology entity.Please contact the recruiter if you have any questions on the pathology reforms and transition of this role to the new entity.

Your new role:

  • Perform a variety of biochemical, haematological and immunological analyses using both automated and manual methods.
  • Support specimen reception and pre-analytic processing.
  • Ensure testing is accurate and timely.
  • Contribute to quality improvement within the service.

About you:

  • You hold a bachelor’s degree in science or in applied science, or an equivalent qualification.
  • You have experience in a tertiary hospital or private Biochemistry and or Immunology laboratory is desirable.
  • You show commitment to customer focused service, with great verbal and written communication skills.
  • You work well in a team environment with competing priorities.
