Your contribution is to provide high quality psychological services to young people in youth detention centres, including psychological assessments, treatments and interventions. The Psychologist's key responsibilities are:

  • Foster an environment that enables external involvement and access, and internal practices that provide, as far as possible, for normalised living and working environments in the centre.
  • Actively participate in the suicide risk assessment process for young people and ensure this information, and information on specific case management issues, is provided for integration into the Single Case Plans of young people.
  • Provide high quality psychological and behavioural assessments, referrals, interventions and individual management strategies for young people in detention and prepare documentation and reports as required using manual and computerised systems.
  • As part of a multi-disciplinary team, and in collaboration with external stakeholders, develop, coordinate and monitor the involvement of staff and external agencies in the provision of welfare, behavioural management, assessment, case management services, daily living routines and the provision of developmental, vocational and recreational programs.
  • Facilitate and arrange psychiatric and psychological referrals when required and liaise with Queensland Health staff in relation to management of those young people with psychiatric diagnoses and/or under medication.
  • Develop, facilitate, monitor, evaluate/review intervention strategies, counselling and therapeutic programs for detained young people, in conjunction with the young person's needs and goals, according to Youth Detention and Youth Justice standards.
  • Assist with the security and safety of the Centre by observing operational procedures and standards as they impact on the role of the psychologist.
