Purpose of Position

The primary objective of the child care worker’s position within the child care setting is to ensure supervision, care and education of children in their care.   The position works closely with the room Team Leader and as required with the Director of Possum Place Child and Vacation Care Centres and senior management in providing high quality child care.   The position is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating routines and interactions with all service participants, developing, participating in and maintaining program activities and individual portfolios.   The position is responsible for compliance with all legislative and policy directives and promotion of quality care.

Diploma of Children’s Services Associate Diploma Social Studies (Child Care) Certificate Child Care Studies Child Care Certificate Certificate III – Child Studies Or other recognized relevant qualifications in similar education and child related disciplines i.e. primary teaching, psychology, social welfare which are inclusive of child development and communication

Knowledge of safety requirements and child protection for children in child care settings as well as knowledge of health, hygiene and nutrition needs for children


Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills and a commitment to on-going professional development


Ability to initiate, facilitate and maintain appropriate interactions with and between, children, families, staff, HNELHD, professional peers and the community and knowledge of external support services such as, special education, ethnic community councils, and internal groups such as staff and family forums


Experience in an early &/or middle childhood service inclusive of group care. Knowledge of stages of child development to use in planning, implementing and evaluating a developmentally appropriate program and individual portfolios for children aged between six weeks and six years
