What you'll be doing
CDS uses family-partnership, trauma-informed and culturally responsive service principles to undertake specialist (tertiary level) interdisciplinary, diagnostic assessment services for young children with emerging developmental disabilities and other complex neurodevelopmental conditions.
The CDS aims to optimise short-term and lifetime outcomes for children with challenging developmental needs by helping families to understand their children’s needs and enhance parent/carer capacity to support their children.
The position is also responsible for undertaking short-term care coordination to support integrated care planning across multiple agencies and advocates for families, particularly those needing additional psychosocial support to access and navigate disability support services.
As the sole speech pathologist, in the LHD-wide CDS team, the role works autonomously to undertake complex functional, pragmatic and social communication and language assessments, which contribute to the interdisciplinary diagnoses and personalised care plans for preschool age children.
The position also provides specialised speech pathology advice and consultation to NSLHD community paediatricians, in relation to school-age children with complex behavioural and developmental needs, who are not yet eligible for NDIS funding. These speech pathology consultations and assessments aim to identify any language and communication impairments and how these issues are impacting a child’s functioning across various settings, including school. The speech pathology assessments contribute corroborative information to inform interdisciplinary diagnosis, and development of strategies that help children improve their functioning and coping. The position also provides support, supervision, education and mentoring for other team members, multidisciplinary students, speech pathologists, and other clinicians in CYFH regarding their area of expertise
