• The Registered Midwife supports excellence in midwifery care and patient outcomes, the registered midwife is a clinician who provides direct midwifery care with clinical competence and capability, optimising the perinatal journey of women and their families and enabling woman centred care with enhanced access to services.

About the role

The registered midwife works in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team to provide woman and family centred, quality, safe patient care. 

The Registered Midwife working in birth suite, the maternity/gynaecology ward, or rotating between both areas provides contemporary, evidence-based midwifery services and demonstrates competence in the provision of midwifery care as specified by achievement of the standards of practice and registration requirements from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This is evidenced by educational preparation, continuing professional development, adherences to relevant legislation and the context of care.

The Registered Midwife will:

(a) Practise independently and interdependently.

(b) Assume accountability and responsibility for their own actions utilising the decision-making framework of NMBA in the delegation of activities to enrolled nurses, assistants in nursing/midwifery and other healthcare workers.

(c) Be an accountable and responsible midwifery professional who works in partnership with women to provide the necessary support, care and women-family centred advice across the perinatal continuum.

(d) Demonstrates evidence of increasing autonomy and use increasing levels of professional judgement in the clinical environment as the employee moves from beginning to experienced practitioner.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Contemporary clinical knowledge in the areas of antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal midwifery practice delivering competent midwifery care in complex situations while providing support to other team members. 
  • Ability to provide Patient and Family centred care to the patient using best practice and within the standard of practice of a Registered Midwife.
  • Ability to communicate to a high standard effectively and engage with members of the healthcare team, patients, relatives and visitors whilst displaying a high level of professional midwifery care.
  • Ability to educate, inform, counsel and support patients and families on general and clinical information relevant to patient's care, accessing the Clinical Midwife when expert advice is required.
  • Ability to comprehensively assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships, open communication and a positive environment within a multidisciplinary team, actively contributing to the learning and development of others to a high standard.
