A collaborative and pivotal role in the running of VFPMS at MCH.
Involvement in many aspects of the assessment of abused and neglected children and adolescents.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical and operational support to the VFPMS team at MCH. Specific responsibility is in providing a first contact point and triage service for enquiries relating to requests for the assessment of abused and neglected children from within MCH and throughout the South-Eastern suburbs of Victoria. The Clinical Nurse Specialist role involves close collaboration with key VFPMS stakeholders (Police and Child Protection) and allied health, mental health and counselling service providers. Professional development opportunities will be provided and teaching and training will form part of the role once a suitable level of forensic knowledge is attained. Support for the VFPMS team at the RCH will occasionally be required.
You are a suitably qualified Registered Nurse with at least 2 years paediatric experience. Previous experience in triage would be highly beneficial and experience with vulnerable children and families an advantage. You will model the Monash Health iCARE values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence. You should be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and have excellent interpersonal skills, be proactive, hardworking and passionate and demonstrate strong organisational skills. The ability to relate to a diverse range of people is crucial.
Based at MCH to coordinate VFPMS clinical service delivery.
Evaluation and triage of children and young people who present with problems that might indicate abuse, assault or neglect.
To support the clinical management and administration of resources within the service.
To assist with the service team in planning documentation of patient activities.
To initiate, support and participate in appropriate research, education and development activities.
To develop and maintain communication systems that enhance patient care delivery and service functioning.
To maintain standards that are consistent with professional responsibilities, VFPMS standards and to operate within scope of practice.
To assist the Medical Director, Deputy Director VFPMS and Nurse Unit Manager VFPMS to collect, collate and report data in relation to the function of the VFPMS.
Drive a positive culture of excellence in service and care to all patients, families and stakeholders.
Coordinate and assist with the education of other professionals involved with the care of abused or neglected children.
Mon- Fri regular hours, no shifts or AH on-call work required.
Location and about the VFPMS:
Monash Health provides integrated health care services available to over 1.3 million people. In early 2017 we opened a new dedicated Children’s Hospital, co-located next to Monash Medical Centre Clayton. This role will involve working primarily in the VFPMS clinic at Monash Children’s Hospital, Clayton. Travel to the VFPMS at the RCH may be required on occasions.
The Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service (VFPMS) provides a coordinated state-wide forensic paediatric medical service to abused and neglected children, young people and their care-givers. The service provides 24 hour medical services for evaluation of children’s injuries and the evaluation of suspected child sexual abuse. Consultations are also provided to health professionals, police and child protection workers in relation to children in whom child abuse is suspected.
