Like Phar Lap, the Man from Snowy River, and the Dog that helped McDougall Top the Score, the Royal Flying Doctor Service is part of Australian folklore.
Founded by Flynn of the Outback in 1928, the RFDS was the world’s first Air Ambulance service and has an iconic history of serving people in outback Australia. Working with the RFDS is personally and professionally rewarding and is often recalled as a career highlight in a doctor’s working life.
The RFDS is now one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world, providing extensive primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to people over an area of 7.69 million square kilometres or almost 3 million square miles of rural and outback Australia.
Situated within the South Eastern Section of the RFDS in the city of Broken Hill, four (4) General Practitioner positions are available in the RFDS clinic where GPs provide direct clinical services as well as telemedicine services. Visits to clinics in outback towns take place on a drive to, or fly-in fly-out, basis.
There are also opportunities depending on the GP’s skills and experience to participate in retrieval medicine services operated by the RFDS.
You will work in a strong team-based environment, with nursing and allied health support, and with specialty services provided by visiting medical consultants and at the nearby Broken Hill Base Hospital.
You will live in the Silver City of Broken Hill, the birthplace of BHP the world’s biggest mining company, and famed for its hospitality, culture and dramatic outback landscapes. The city has excellent educational, sporting and cultural facilities and daily commercial air links to Adelaide, Sydney and other centres. Broken Hill Railway Station is on the transcontinental Indian Pacific Line from Sydney to Perth.
As well as possessing necessary clinical skills and experience, and qualifications and registration in general practice in Australia or overseas, applicants must be team workers, great communicators and committed to the values and ethos of the RFDS. Together with a good chairside and bedside manner with all patients, the ability to work with indigenous people, their families and communities is essential in ensuring proper access to services and improvements in indigenous health.
GP Registrars who have largely completed their GP training may also be considered for the roles.
Registration with the Medical Board of Australia/AHPRA will be essential and the RFDS will provide work visa sponsorship if required.
A very attractive remuneration and benefits package is provided for qualified GPs or GP Registrars comprising base salary, superannuation, motor vehicle allowance, modern housing accommodation, relocation and other allowances, together with 5 week’s annual leave and 2 week's paid study leave per year.
