The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) has the responsibility of providing public hospital and health services to a population of approximately 250,000 people. The primary catchment of the CHHHS covers an area of 142 900 square kilometres from Tully in the south, Cow Bay in the north and Croydon in the west. The outer western region of our Service encompasses extremely remote communities.

Mental Health and Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service.
Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (MHATODS) provides a range of community and inpatient services, staffed by multidisciplinary teams with a broad mix of skills, knowledge and professional backgrounds.
The services currently include a Acute Adult Mental Health Unit; Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit; (subacute) Adult Step Up Step Down Unit, Community Care Unit; Acute Care Team including the 1300 MH CALL Intake Service and Emergency Department MH Team; Adult Mental Health Community Care Teams; Child and Youth Mental Health Services; EVOLVE Therapeutic Services; Older Persons Psychiatry Service ; Consultation Liaison Services; Mobile Intensive Rehabilitation Team; Rural and Remote Mental Health Services; Forensic Mental Health Service; and Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services.
Fulfill the responsibilities of this role in accordance with QPS values as outlined above.
Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Implement and monitor the organisation’s quality standards, occupational health and safety policies, procedures and programs and provide clinical governance in the relevant work area.
Be responsible for providing excellent clinical governance under the direction and leadership of the Mental Health ATOD Service Clinical Director and Service Director.
Proactively drive the delivery of best practice inpatient and community mental health and ATOD assessment and management programs for patients of the Cairns and Hinterland MHATODS by utilising specialist psychiatrist training and experience.
Provision of clinical leadership within the Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health multidisciplinary teams by taking clinical responsibility for patients through collaborative care planning utilising risk management frameworks.
Active participation in MHATOD service strategic and operational planning including recruitment and retention, driving quality improvement activities, and ensuring high level team function and communication.
Delivery of education and training to junior CHHHS MHATODS medical staff, medical students and all mental health clinicians.
Positive promotion of the specialty of psychiatry/ senior staff specialist/ senior medical officer by performing the role in a professional manner and engaging consumers, carers, other non-mental health clinicians and non-government service providers in active communication about patient care.
Maintenance of personal clinical and professional knowledge and skills by participating in appropriate continuing professional development programs and educational opportunities.
Actively support the delivery of private practice where reasonable, and clinically appropriate in accordance with the Granted Private Practice Agreement.
Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
Registration as a Specialist in Psychiatry/ Senior Staff Specialist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Fellowship or membership of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). as recognised by the Australian Medical council (AMC) including maintenance of CPD and good standing as required by AHPRA for the maintenance of Specialist Registration.
Whilst not mandatory, it would be well regarded to be acceptable to the Training Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists to supervise training registrars
This position requires the incumbent to operate a class ‘C’ motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided before commencement of duty.
It is a condition of employment for the employee in this role to be, and remain, vaccinated against or non-susceptible to the following Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) during their employment: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella (chicken pox) and Pertussis (whooping cough). Existing - 4 - staff engaged prior to 1 July 2016 (and have not had a break in service) are not subject to this new condition of employment unless they are moving from one Hospital and Health Service to another Hospital and Health Service within Queensland). Existing staff that have previously submitted this evidence since 1 July 2016 will not be required to resubmit.
It is a condition of employment for the employee in this role to be vaccinated against or not susceptible to Hepatitis B. Proof of vaccination or non-susceptibility is a condition of employment for all staff (new and existing) who have direct contact with patients or who in the course of their work may be exposed to blood/body fluids or contaminated sharps.
L25 – L27 $204 543 - $216 865 per annum
L18 – L24 $171 044 - $198 678 per annum
